The Algarve is one of the most popular regions in southern Portugal, known for its golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, small historic towns, and beautiful Atlantic coastline. It is the kind of destination where you can combine relaxing beach days with road trips, old towns, coastal walks, and boat tours.

For a first trip, it can be difficult to decide where to go because there are many places worth visiting. Lagos, Albufeira, Faro, Tavira, Silves, Carvoeiro, Portimão, and Sagres all offer something different.

This guide covers the best places in the Algarve, what you can see in each destination, how to travel around the region, and a simple 3-day Algarve itinerary for first-time visitors.

How to Travel Around the Algarve

A rental car is one of the easiest ways to explore the Algarve, especially if you want to visit several towns and beaches in a short trip.

The main attractions are spread across the region, so having a car gives you more flexibility. You can stop at viewpoints, beaches, small towns, and coastal trails without depending on bus schedules.

Public transport is also available between many of the larger towns. However, reaching smaller beaches and some coastal attractions can take longer without a car.

For a longer Algarve road trip, staying in one central location can also work well. The region is not extremely large, and many destinations can be visited as day trips.

A useful approach is to travel gradually from east to west. This reduces unnecessary backtracking and makes a road trip easier to organize.

Tavira – A Charming Town in Eastern Algarve

Tavira is one of the most attractive towns in the eastern Algarve. It has a slower pace than some of the region’s larger resort towns and is known for its white buildings, traditional streets, and location beside the Gilão River.

The historic centre is the best place to start exploring. Walk through the cobbled streets, visit the Castle of Tavira, and cross the historic Roman Bridge.

The castle area is surrounded by greenery and provides views across the town.

Visit Ilha de Tavira

One of the main reasons to visit Tavira is Ilha de Tavira, a long sandy island with beautiful beaches.

The island can be reached by boat, making it an easy addition to a Tavira day trip. It is a good choice if you want some quiet time beside the Atlantic away from the busier resort areas.

Tavira is especially useful for travellers who want a combination of history, local atmosphere, and beaches.

Faro – Explore the Capital of the Algarve

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and an important arrival point for visitors flying into the region.

Many travellers use Faro simply as a starting point, but the city deserves some time of its own.

The historic centre, known as Cidade Velha, is surrounded by old walls and has narrow streets, traditional buildings, and attractive squares.

One of the most recognizable entrances is the Arco da Vila, which leads into the old city.

Faro Cathedral

The Sé de Faro, or Faro Cathedral, is one of the city’s major landmarks.

Visitors can explore the cathedral and climb its tower for views over the old town and surrounding area.

Another unusual attraction is the Chapel of Bones at Igreja do Carmo, where the interior features human bones and skulls. It is not for everyone, but it is an interesting historical site.

Ria Formosa Natural Park

One of Faro’s biggest advantages is its access to Ria Formosa Natural Park.

The park is made up of lagoons, islands, wetlands, and waterways and is an important habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Boat trips are available from Faro and can take visitors through parts of the lagoon system. Some tours also visit islands such as Ilha Deserta, known for its long sandy beach and quieter surroundings.

If you enjoy nature and wildlife, adding Ria Formosa to a Faro visit is worth considering.

Loulé – A Traditional Algarve Town

Loulé offers a different side of the Algarve. Instead of focusing mainly on beaches, the town gives visitors a chance to see more traditional Portuguese culture.

The most famous attraction is Loulé Market, housed in a distinctive Moorish-style building.

Inside, you can find fresh produce, regional foods, crafts, and other local products.

The historic centre is also worth exploring on foot. Loulé Castle dates back to the medieval period, while the Church of São Clemente is known for its traditional Portuguese tiles and decorative interior.

Loulé also hosts cultural events and festivals during the year, including the well-known Loulé Carnival.

For travellers interested in local markets, architecture, and culture, Loulé makes a useful stop between Faro and the central Algarve.

Albufeira – Beaches, Nightlife and Boat Trips

Albufeira is one of the most famous destinations in the Algarve and attracts visitors looking for beaches, restaurants, entertainment, and nightlife.

The town has two very different sides.

The Old Town has traditional streets, restaurants, cafés, and squares close to the beach. It is a good area for an evening walk and dinner.

The newer part of town is home to The Strip, where bars, clubs, and entertainment venues stay busy, particularly during the summer season.

Beaches Around Albufeira

Praia dos Pescadores, or Fisherman’s Beach, sits close to the Old Town and is one of the easiest beaches to reach.

For a more dramatic landscape, head towards Praia da Falésia. The beach is famous for its long stretch of golden sand backed by colorful cliffs.

Albufeira is also a popular starting point for boat trips along the Algarve coast.

Depending on the tour, you may have the chance to explore sea caves, look for dolphins, or simply enjoy the coastline from the water.

Praia da Marinha and the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

Praia da Marinha is one of the most recognizable beaches in the Algarve.

The beach sits below tall limestone cliffs and is surrounded by rocky formations and clear Atlantic water.

But the beach is only part of the attraction.

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail follows the cliffs along the coast and provides some of the best walking scenery in this part of the Algarve.

The trail stretches for roughly 6 km between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes.

Along the way, you will see cliffs, small beaches, rock formations, viewpoints, and sections of the Atlantic coastline that are difficult to appreciate from the road.

The route is generally considered a moderate coastal walk and can take around three to four hours depending on your pace and stops.

Benagil Cave

The trail also passes near the Benagil area.

Benagil Cave is famous for its large opening in the roof, which allows sunlight to enter the cave.

The cave is best viewed from the water. Boat and other guided excursions operate along this section of the coast.

If you want to see the famous skylight effect, morning conditions can provide interesting light inside the cave.

Silves – Discover Algarve’s Moorish History

Silves is one of the best places in the Algarve for travellers interested in history.

The town sits inland rather than directly on the coast and is dominated by its famous Silves Castle.

The red sandstone castle is one of the most important historic landmarks in the region. Its elevated position also provides views over the surrounding countryside.

Walk through the old streets around the castle and explore the traditional buildings, cafés, and small shops.

Another important landmark is the Silves Cathedral, located close to the castle.

Silves also has a riverside area where you can take a relaxed walk or stop for a meal.

The town hosts cultural events during the year, including the Silves Medieval Fair, when the historic centre takes on a medieval theme with costumes, performances, food, and entertainment.

If your Algarve trip is mostly focused on beaches, Silves is a good place to add some history and culture to the itinerary.

Carvoeiro – Cliffs, Caves and Coastal Views

Carvoeiro is a small coastal town surrounded by dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches.

The main beach, Praia de Carvoeiro, sits in a sheltered cove close to the centre. Restaurants, cafés, and accommodation are located around the beach and nearby streets.

One of the most interesting places to explore here is Algar Seco.

This coastal area features unusual rock formations, caves, natural pools, and viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic.

Carvoeiro Boardwalk

The Carvoeiro Boardwalk is an easy way to enjoy the coastal scenery without committing to a long hike.

The wooden walkway follows the cliffs and provides access to several viewpoints.

One of the well-known formations along the route is A Boneca, a rock formation with openings that frame the ocean.

The area can look particularly beautiful around sunset, when the cliffs and sea take on warmer colors.

Carvoeiro is also a convenient base for boat trips to nearby caves and sections of the Algarve coastline.

Portimão – Beaches and Seafood

Portimão is one of the Algarve’s larger towns and is known for its waterfront, seafood restaurants, marina, and nearby beaches.

The city has a strong connection with fishing and maritime history. The Portimão Museum, located in a former fish cannery, explains more about the area’s industrial and fishing heritage.

For most visitors, however, the main attraction is the coastline.

Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha is one of the most famous beaches in the Algarve.

The wide sandy beach is surrounded by impressive cliffs and has plenty of restaurants, beach facilities, and places to relax.

Nearby Praia dos Três Irmãos is another scenic option, with rock formations, smaller sections of beach, and coastal views.

Portimão is also a useful starting point for boat trips, dolphin-watching excursions, and other activities along the coast.

Lagos – One of the Best Places in the Algarve

Lagos is one of the most popular places to visit in the western Algarve.

It combines a historic old town with beautiful beaches, dramatic cliffs, restaurants, boat tours, and easy access to Ponta da Piedade.

The historic centre is pleasant to explore on foot. Look for traditional buildings, small squares, cafés, and landmarks connected to the town’s maritime history.

The Forte da Ponta da Bandeira is located near the waterfront, while the town also has museums and historic sites connected with Portugal’s past.

Best Beaches in Lagos

Lagos has several beaches within easy reach of the town.

1. Praia Dona Ana

Praia Dona Ana is surrounded by golden cliffs and is one of the best-known beaches near Lagos.

It is relatively close to the historic centre, although access involves some walking and the area can become busy during summer.

2. Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo is a smaller cove surrounded by cliffs.

A long staircase leads down to the beach, so visitors should be prepared for the climb back up.

Because of its size and popularity, arriving early can make the experience more comfortable.

3. Praia da Batata

Praia da Batata is close to Lagos Old Town and is a convenient choice when you do not want to travel far.

It is particularly useful for a short visit because it can be reached on foot from the centre.

4. Meia Praia

Meia Praia is very different from the smaller cliff-backed beaches.

It is a long, wide stretch of sand with plenty of open space and is a good choice for travellers who prefer larger beaches.

5. Praia da Luz

Praia da Luz is located close to Lagos and provides another beach option if you want to explore beyond the main Lagos beaches.

The village has a relaxed seaside atmosphere and a promenade beside the water.

Ponta da Piedade – A Must-See Near Lagos

If you only have time for a few major attractions around Lagos, make room for Ponta da Piedade.

This dramatic coastal landscape is known for tall limestone cliffs, arches, rock pillars, caves, and clear blue-green water.

There are several viewpoints and walking paths around the cliffs, allowing visitors to see the coastline from above.

The lighthouse area is also a useful reference point when exploring the cliffs.

See Ponta da Piedade From the Water

The cliffs look very different from the sea.

Boat tours leave from Lagos and travel around the rock formations and caves. Kayaking is another option when conditions allow.

A boat trip can provide a closer look at the arches and caves that are difficult to see from the clifftop.

For photography, both early morning and late afternoon can offer good light, while sunset gives the cliffs a warmer appearance.

Sagres – The Wild Side of the Algarve

Sagres sits at the southwestern end of the Algarve and feels different from the busier resort towns.

The landscape is more open and rugged, with large cliffs, strong Atlantic waves, and fewer dense developments.

Sagres is particularly popular with surfers and travellers interested in coastal scenery.

The Fortaleza de Sagres is one of the area’s major historical attractions. Its position above the cliffs provides wide views of the Atlantic.

The nearby Cabo de São Vicente is another important stop. The cape marks the southwestern corner of mainland Europe and has dramatic cliffs overlooking the ocean.

Sagres is a good addition to an Algarve road trip if you want to see a less resort-focused side of the region.

A Simple 3-Day Algarve Itinerary

Three days is not enough to see every corner of the Algarve, but you can still cover several of the region’s major attractions with a car.

Here is a practical route for a first trip.

Day 1: Faro, Loulé and Albufeira

Start in Faro and spend the morning exploring the Old Town.

Walk through Cidade Velha, see Arco da Vila, and visit Faro Cathedral if you have enough time.

If nature is a priority, consider a short trip into Ria Formosa Natural Park instead.

From Faro, continue to Loulé.

Spend a few hours exploring the market and historic centre before continuing towards Albufeira.

In the evening, explore Albufeira Old Town, have dinner, and enjoy the atmosphere around the waterfront.

Day 1 route:

Faro → Loulé → Albufeira

Day 2: Praia da Marinha, Benagil, Carvoeiro and Silves

Start early at Praia da Marinha.

Walk part of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail and stop at the coastal viewpoints.

Continue towards the Benagil area if you want to take a boat trip to see the famous cave.

Afterwards, head to Carvoeiro.

Explore Praia de Carvoeiro and walk along the Carvoeiro Boardwalk towards Algar Seco.

Later in the day, drive inland to Silves.

Visit Silves Castle and explore the historic centre before returning to your accommodation.

Day 2 route:

Praia da Marinha → Benagil → Carvoeiro → Silves

Day 3: Lagos and Sagres

Spend your third day in the western Algarve.

Start in Lagos Old Town, then visit one or two of the nearby beaches.

Continue towards Ponta da Piedade.

Spend some time walking along the clifftop viewpoints or take a boat trip if conditions are suitable.

After Lagos, continue west towards Sagres.

Explore the Fortaleza de Sagres and, if time allows, continue to Cabo de São Vicente for the dramatic coastal views.

Return to Lagos or another western Algarve base in the evening.

Day 3 route:

Lagos → Ponta da Piedade → Sagres → Cabo de São Vicente

How Many Days Do You Need in the Algarve?

The ideal length depends on how much of the region you want to see.

3 days

Three days works for a quick road trip covering major highlights such as Faro, Albufeira, Carvoeiro, Lagos, and Sagres.

The schedule will be fairly active.

5 days

Five days gives you more time for beaches, coastal walks, boat trips, and smaller towns such as Tavira and Silves.

You can also slow down instead of changing locations every few hours.

7 days or more

A week or longer is useful if you want a proper Algarve holiday rather than simply a sightseeing road trip.

You can spend more time on the beaches, explore different hiking routes, visit Ria Formosa, and take day trips without rushing.

Where Should You Stay in the Algarve?

There is no single place that works for every traveller.

Faro works well if you want easy airport access, history, and Ria Formosa.

Albufeira is useful for beaches, restaurants, nightlife, and a wide choice of accommodation.

Carvoeiro is a good option for travellers who want dramatic coastal scenery and a smaller seaside atmosphere.

Lagos is one of the most convenient choices for exploring the western Algarve, especially if beaches, cliffs, and boat tours are high on your list.

You can also stay somewhere in the middle of the Algarve and make day trips in different directions.

For a short trip, choosing one base can save time because you do not need to change hotels every night.

Best Time to Visit the Algarve

The Algarve has a mild climate and can be visited throughout much of the year.

Summer is the busiest period. The weather is usually ideal for beaches, but popular towns and coastal attractions can become crowded.

Spring and autumn can be more comfortable for sightseeing and hiking because temperatures are generally more suitable for outdoor activities.

Winter is quieter and can work well if your main goal is exploring towns, walking, and enjoying the scenery rather than spending every day on the beach.

If you plan to hike the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail or spend a lot of time walking around towns, avoiding the hottest part of the day is useful during warmer months.

Tips for Visiting the Algarve

Rent a car if you want to explore widely. It makes it much easier to combine beaches, towns, viewpoints, and coastal trails.

Start early at popular beaches. Places such as Praia do Camilo and Praia da Marinha can become busy during peak season.

Keep some flexibility in your schedule. Weather and sea conditions can affect boat trips and coastal activities.

Wear comfortable shoes. Many of the best viewpoints involve uneven paths, stairs, or cliffside walking.

Do not underestimate the sun. Carry water, sunscreen, and sun protection, especially when hiking.

Allow extra time for coastal drives. Distances may look short on a map, but stops at viewpoints and beaches can quickly extend a journey.

Book popular boat trips ahead during busy periods. Benagil Cave and Ponta da Piedade excursions can be popular in high season.

Final Thoughts: Which Are the Best Places in the Algarve?

The Algarve is much more than a beach destination.

Lagos is a strong choice for dramatic cliffs, beaches, historic streets, and Ponta da Piedade.

Albufeira offers beaches, nightlife, restaurants, and easy access to boat tours.

Faro combines history with access to Ria Formosa, while Tavira offers a quieter atmosphere and access to island beaches.

For history, Silves is one of the most interesting inland stops. Carvoeiro is ideal for cliffs, caves, and coastal walks, while Sagres shows a wilder side of the Algarve.

The best way to experience the region is to mix different types of places instead of spending the whole trip in one resort. A few historic towns, several beaches, a coastal hike, and a boat trip can give you a much better picture of what makes Algarve Portugal such a popular destination.
