Washington is a great place for people who love nature. You can find high mountains, green forests, clear lakes and long beaches here.

If you are looking for federal parks in Washington, there are three main national parks you should know about. They are Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park and North Cascades National Park.

All three parks are different. Mount Rainier is known for its huge mountain and wildflowers. Olympic has beaches, rainforest and mountains. North Cascades is full of rocky peaks and alpine lakes.

You can visit one park or plan a longer trip for all three. Just keep in mind that the parks are spread across the state.

The 3 National Parks in Washington

Washington has three national parks:

  • Mount Rainier National Park
  • Olympic National Park
  • North Cascades National Park

Each park has something different to offer. So, your choice can depend on what you want to see and do.

1. Mount Rainier National Park

Mount Rainier is one of the most famous places in Washington. The mountain is huge and often covered with snow.

The national park around it has forests, lakes, waterfalls and mountain trails. You can also see wildflowers during the warmer months.

For a first visit, Paradise and Sunrise are two areas worth knowing about.

Paradise

Paradise is on the south side of Mount Rainier. It is also one of the busiest parts of the park.

There are many things to see around this area. You can hike, see waterfalls and enjoy views of the mountain.

The Skyline Trail is one of the popular hikes here. The trail takes you higher into the mountain area. On a clear day, you can get wide views of Mount Rainier and nearby peaks.

There are also some nice waterfalls around Paradise.

Myrtle Falls is a popular stop. Mount Rainier can be seen behind the waterfall.

You can also visit Narada Falls and Christine Falls. These are easier to reach from the road. Comet Falls is another option if you want to do a longer walk.

Reflection Lakes

Reflection Lakes is another nice place to stop near Paradise.

When the water is calm, Mount Rainier can appear in the lake. Sunrise and sunset can be especially nice here.

The area can get busy in summer. Mosquitoes can also be a problem, so keep that in mind.

Sunrise

Sunrise is on the eastern side of Mount Rainier. It is one of the best areas for hiking in the park.

Several trails start close to the Sunrise Visitor Center.

The Burroughs Mountain Trail is a popular choice. It takes you into a rocky mountain landscape. You can also get great views of Mount Rainier from higher parts of the trail.

Another place to see in summer is Berkeley Park. The area can have lots of colorful wildflowers when they are in bloom.

You can also hike toward Mount Fremont Lookout. The old fire lookout gives you a nice view over the surrounding area.

Close to Sunrise, you can also visit Tipsoo Lake. It is a small alpine lake with a beautiful mountain view.

Best Time to Visit Mount Rainier

Summer is usually the easiest time for hiking at Mount Rainier.

July and August are good months for many higher trails. Snow can still be found in some places, so check conditions before you go.

Early fall can also be a good time. The weather gets cooler and the landscape starts to change color.

Winter is very different. Snow can close roads and many hiking trails may not be accessible.

How Many Days for Mount Rainier?

You can visit Mount Rainier as a day trip from Seattle. But it can be a long day because of the driving.

If you have two or three days, you can explore much more of the park.

You can spend time around both Paradise and Sunrise. You will also have more time for hiking and scenic stops.

Getting to Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier is southeast of Seattle. It is also possible to reach the park from Portland.

The route depends on which part of the park you want to visit. Paradise and Sunrise are reached from different directions.

If you are flying into Washington, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is a useful starting point. From there, you can rent a car and drive toward the park.

2. Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is very different from Mount Rainier.

This park has many types of landscapes in one place. You can see mountains, beaches, lakes and rainforest during the same trip.

The park is also very large. Because of this, you should plan your route before visiting.

Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent

Hurricane Ridge is one of the most popular areas in Olympic National Park.

The road takes you high into the mountains. On a clear day, you can see the Olympic Mountains and other areas around the park.

The short trail to Hurricane Hill is one option for visitors who want a mountain walk.

Then there is Lake Crescent.

The lake is surrounded by forests and mountains. You can walk around the area and visit Marymere Falls.

Sol Duc Falls is another waterfall worth adding to your trip if you have enough time.

Northern Pacific Coast

The northern coast of Olympic National Park feels more wild.

One of the main places to visit is Cape Flattery. A short trail leads to viewpoints over the Pacific Ocean and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

This area is on the land of the Makah Tribe. Check the current access rules before visiting.

You can also visit Shi Shi Beach. The beach is known for its rocky formations and sea stacks.

Southern Pacific Coast

The southern coast has several beaches that are easy to add to a road trip.

Rialto Beach is one of the better-known beaches. You can walk along the beach toward Hole-in-the-Wall when conditions allow.

Ruby Beach is another popular stop. It has driftwood, rocks and sea stacks.

The beaches around La Push are also worth seeing. These include First Beach, Second Beach and Third Beach.

If you have more time, continue south toward the Kalaloch area and Lake Quinault.

Hoh Rainforest

The Hoh Rainforest is probably one of the most famous parts of Olympic National Park.

The forest is very green. Trees are covered with moss and the whole area feels different from the beaches and mountains.

The Hall of Mosses is a short walk and a popular choice.

For a longer walk, you can continue onto the Hoh River Trail.

Try to arrive early in summer. The rainforest gets very busy, especially on weekends.

Best Time to Visit Olympic National Park

Summer is usually the easiest season for a first trip.

The weather is generally warmer and there is less rain than during the wetter months. Still, rain and fog can happen at any time.

Spring and fall can also work well. Just be ready for changing weather.

Winter brings a lot more rain to the Olympic Peninsula. The higher mountain areas can also have snow.

How Many Days for Olympic National Park?

Olympic is a big park, so one day is not enough if you want to see the main areas.

Try to plan for three or four days if possible.

With only two days, focus on a few places. Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, the Hoh Rainforest and one or two beaches can make a good trip.

Trying to cover the whole park in a short time means spending a lot of time driving.

Getting to Olympic National Park

Seattle is a common starting point for Olympic National Park.

You can take a ferry toward the Olympic Peninsula. You can also drive through Tacoma and continue around Hood Canal.

If you are coming from outside Washington, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is a practical airport to use.

3. North Cascades National Park

North Cascades National Park is known for its mountain scenery.

The area has sharp peaks, forests, alpine lakes and long mountain views. It is also more remote than the other two parks.

That can be a good thing if you want a quieter trip.

Why Visit North Cascades?

North Cascades is a great place for hiking and scenic drives.

The mountains here look very different from the landscape around Seattle. There are many rocky peaks and clear mountain lakes.

The park can also have fewer visitors than Mount Rainier and Olympic.

But getting there takes more time. So, it is better to plan a few days instead of trying to see it in one afternoon.

Heather-Maple Pass Loop

The Heather-Maple Pass Loop is one of the popular hikes in the area.

The trail takes you around an alpine landscape. You get views of mountains, lakes and open slopes along the way.

Wildflowers can also be seen during summer.

Snow can stay on higher parts of the trail for a long time. Check the latest trail conditions before starting.

Blue Lake

Blue Lake is another popular hike.

The trail goes through the forest before reaching a clear mountain lake. Rocky peaks surround the lake.

It is a good option if you want to see an alpine lake without choosing one of the longest hikes in the area.

Hidden Lake Lookout

Hidden Lake Lookout is a harder option.

The road to the trailhead can be rough. The hike itself is also steep in places.

But the views from the top are worth considering if you are ready for a more difficult hike.

Drive the North Cascades Highway

You do not have to hike all day in North Cascades.

Highway 20, also called the North Cascades Highway, is one of the main scenic routes through the area.

The road passes through mountains and gives you access to several viewpoints.

One popular stop is the Diablo Lake Overlook. The lake is known for its blue-green color and mountain setting.

You can also visit Ross Lake. Depending on the season and available services, boating activities may be possible there.

Best Time to Visit North Cascades

Summer is normally the best season for hiking.

July and August are better for higher trails because there is usually less snow.

Fall can also be a beautiful time to visit. The mountains and trees start taking on autumn colors.

The North Cascades Highway closes during part of the year because of snow. Some hiking trails can also remain covered with snow well into summer.

Always check road and trail conditions before your trip.

How Many Days for North Cascades?

North Cascades is not really a quick day trip from Seattle.

The drive can take several hours depending on where you are going.

A two- or three-day trip gives you more time to hike and enjoy the scenic roads.

You can also spend more time here if you are interested in backpacking.

Getting to North Cascades

From Seattle, you can take I-5 north and then connect to Highway 20.

Highway 20 takes you through the mountains and toward the park.

If you are flying into Washington, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is one of the easiest airports to use before renting a car.

Which National Park in Washington Should You Visit?

It depends on what you want from the trip.

If you want a huge mountain, wildflowers and classic hiking, Mount Rainier is a good place to start.

If you want beaches, rainforest, lakes and mountains, Olympic National Park gives you the most variety.

If you mainly want mountain views, alpine lakes and hiking, look at North Cascades.

You do not have to visit all three on one trip. One park can easily keep you busy for several days.

Best Time to Visit Federal Parks in Washington

For most outdoor trips, summer is the easiest season.

July and August usually give you better access to mountain trails. But snow can still be present at higher elevations.

Early fall can also be a nice time to travel. The weather is cooler and some areas start showing fall colors.

Winter is harder for many areas. Roads can close and snow can cover hiking trails.

Before you leave, check the weather and current park conditions. Road closures and trail conditions can change during the season.

Tips for Visiting Washington National Parks

A little planning can make your trip much easier.

Check the roads first. Mountain roads can close because of snow, weather or other problems.

Start early. Popular places can become busy during summer.

Carry water and food. Some areas are far from shops and restaurants.

Take extra layers. Weather can change quickly, especially in the mountains.

Do not plan too much in one day. The parks are large and driving between areas can take longer than expected.

Follow park rules. Stay on marked trails, keep your distance from wildlife and take your trash with you.

Final Thoughts

Washington has only three national parks, but each one feels very different.

Mount Rainier National Park is about the giant mountain, wildflowers, waterfalls and alpine trails.

Olympic National Park gives you beaches, rainforest, lakes and mountains in one large area.

North Cascades National Park is a great place for rocky mountain views, alpine lakes and scenic drives.

If you are planning a trip around the federal parks in Washington, do not try to rush through everything.

Pick the park that fits your plans. Give yourself enough time. And always check the current weather, road and trail conditions before heading out.
